## Overview

HistoPad is a tablet that visitors get when they arrive at a castle, cathedral or museum. When they hold it up, they see the room they are standing in as it looked in the past, in a 360° 3D reconstruction.

It also has small quests: visitors look for items around the site, and each one they find unlocks a piece of its history.

## Background

I worked on the first version in 2013, as a freelance Unity developer with Veloce Interactive. AR on tablets was still young, and Unity had very little built-in support for it.

The hard part was lining up the 3D reconstruction with the real room, in places we couldn't control. We tried GPS with the orientation sensors, and AR markers, and in the end used Vuforia in Unity to align the 3D space with the camera view.

The tablets were 2013 hardware, so the reconstructions had to be detailed enough to be worth looking at and light enough to run all day.

## My involvement

- Tested several tracking approaches and built the AR alignment for the first version of the app, in Unity.
- Added the points of interest and the quest system.
