Overview
Spirit Fencer is a real-time puzzle RPG. Battles are fought on a match-3 board: red runes attack, blue runes restore your armour and green runes refill your energy. Between fights you level up and unlock new skills.
It was made by a team of six, with 22 animated characters and dozens of encounters across 5 worlds. I oversaw the whole production, working with every member of the team to coordinate their tasks and define the specs.
Spirit Fencer was one of the most successful titles at Melee Studios. Armor Games published it in 2012, and it reached more than 100,000 players worldwide and earned award nominations. Shortly after the release, I negotiated a publishing deal for its mobile version, Spirit Fencer Arena.
What I learned
This project taught me how much good design specs and proper workflows matter in a team. They were what made the final game match the designer's original vision.
I also learned the value of QA. RPGs need a lot of balancing to be challenging but still fun, and I learned a lot just by watching people play the game in front of me.
