MalagaJam is a non-profit association in Málaga that promotes game development as a culture and as a profession. It runs game jams, talks and workshops.
Background
Around 2015, game development in Málaga was just getting started. A group of local developers kept meeting at the city's first game events, and we decided to start an association to give local talent a place to meet and show their work. I was part of the founding team.
Our first big event was hosting the Global Game Jam, where developers around the world build a game over one weekend. MalagaJam grew from there into one of the largest Global Game Jam sites in the world by number of participants.
My involvement
- Co-founded the association and served as Vice President for four years.
- Gave development workshops and talks.
- Organised two hackathons a year, growing attendance from 50 to more than 300.
Jam games
Now and then, we organisers built something ourselves at the jams, usually to try a technology or an idea we wouldn't have touched otherwise.
Get Rich
April 2015 · Play on itch.io ↗

A local-multiplayer game where rich characters fight each other with their money.
- I built the enemy AI.
Tu Casa Es La Mía
2016 · More about it →

An experimental strategy game where civilisations fight over each other's planets, and the player sends their fleet of ships to invade.
- I made the music and sound effects, with a score that changes with the action.
Heavy Industries
December 2016 · Play on itch.io ↗

A multiplayer game for a whole room, with two kinds of player: one is a CEO stacking Tetris pieces, and everyone else tries not to get crushed, climbing up to defeat him. Built in Unity, with a WebSockets multiplayer engine handling the connections.
- I built the player UI and the input system, so players could join with whatever controller or device they had.
Shut Up and Take My Money
July 2018 · Play on itch.io ↗

Another game for a whole room, this time about investing. Up to 100 people join from their phones as investors, listen to a round of startup elevator pitches and decide which company to back.
- I built the multiplayer engine in C#, and the text-to-speech that reads each pitch in a different voice.
